Low esteem is a condition, a habit of acceptance, which arises from the mental picture you have of yourself. Like the old cliché . . . ‘Do you see the glass half-full or half-empty,’ when a person is enveloped in low self-esteem the glass is always ½ empty! And it is hard to ‘lift yourself up’ and out of that condition. More often, because you have allowed yourself to accept less expectations of yourself; those low expectations (and perhaps not even meeting those) turn full circle; dropping your self-esteem ever further.
